St. Martin School Board OKs projects proposal

BREAUX BRIDGE — The St. Martin Parish School Board voted Wednesday, on the recommendation of Superintendent Richard Lavergne, to divide architectural services on a $30 million district-wide building and improvement initiative to local firms.

The action was delayed last month because some board members did not approve of the hiring of Lafayette-based Poche Prouet, which was still given work as project managers over the entire project, which includes repairs, additions or improvements to nearly every school in the parish.

Before a final vote took place, a substitute motion to table the matter by board member Floyd Knott failed.

“I’d like to know exactly who is in charge of what before we vote on the matter,” he said.

Board member Rodney Ledoux said enough time was wasted and more delays would only further politicize the issue.

“The worst thing is to postpone this,” he said. “We already discussed it and went over it. We need to approve it today.”

After the motion to table failed, board member James Blanchard moved to go with the original list of projects, Including the instructional center, and that motion also failed.

Finally, the board passed a measure to have all work done by the original contractors chosen for the job except the instructional center, which will be sent out for architectural work at a later date.

Board member Steve Fuselier said this was the best way to make sure there were no financial shortfalls during the other projects.

“There were (other projects in the past) that did not get done because money ran short,” he said. “Let’s make up our mind on the project when we are sure we have the money to do it.”

There was no time frame on when construction on the projects would actually begin.
