Parish denies meeting violation

ABBEVILLE — Vermilion Parish Attorney Paul Moresi received permission from the Police Jury on Monday to challenge a state attorney general auditor’s finding the body held two inappropriate executive sessions stemming from a recent landfill fire.

The issue arose following an early July fire at a parish landfill on land being leased from a parish resident.

There was a question of whether the parish or landowner was responsible to pay for putting the fire out and other costs, including having security and emergency personnel at the scene to protect the site, and diverting traffic away from the area.

Moresi said the auditors found no problems with the handling of the situation, but did question the legality of two executive sessions called during meetings following the fire.

“I think what you did was proper and legal,” Moresi said. “The public was served with open and vigorous debate on the issue, and the debate was as robust as I have ever seen in a Police Jury meeting.”

Moresi said the executive sessions were held on his advice because there were representatives of the landowners in the audience and he had a strong feeling the situation would result in litigation.

“There was legal advice I did not want to give you (openly) because (a possible plaintiff) was in the audience,” he said.

Moresi then said he would write a letter to the state explaining the situation clearly and challenging their findings of possible inappropriate action on the part of the jury.
