ULL renames computer science building for prof who founded program
LAFAYETTE — The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s computer science building has been renamed in honor of James Oliver, the late professor who founded the school’s computer science program 50 years ago.
The three-story building opened in 2007, giving a home to a growing department that had been in makeshift offices in the ULL Conference Center for more than 20 years.
The naming of the building is part of ULL’s commemoration festivities this weekend for the 50th anniversary of the computer science program.
ULL acquired its first computer in 1954 — an analog machine — and offered its first computer science class in 1959.
The computer science department was created in 1968, and the first doctorate in the program was awarded in 1971.
