Camera catches suspect in theft of donation jar
Deputies arrested a man for stealing a donation jar, the contents of which were meant for the family of a domestic violence case in which four people were shot, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
Deputies said a video camera in Childers Grocery on Blood River Road recorded the theft, and a receipt at the store helped them identify the man who took the jar from the store’s counter.
Chief of Operations Perry Rushing, of the Sheriff’s Office, said investigators believe the jar contained between $50 and $60 that store patrons had donated for the Carter family of Holden.
Last month, Dennis Carter Sr. shot and killed his estranged wife, Donna Carter, his son Dennis Carter Jr. and his 2-year-old grandson Masson Carter at their Holden home, deputies said.
He also wounded his pregnant daughter-in-law, who subsequently gave birth to a premature child, according to Rushing.
Dennis Carter killed himself about 20 minutes after the other shootings when deputies tried to stop his car.
Investigators booked Donald Ray George, 42, P.O. Box 541, Springfield, on theft of the money jar, according to a news release.
Rushing said the theft occurred Tuesday evening and deputies arrested George later Tuesday night.
Official at the Livingston Parish Detention Center said George remained in jail late Wednesday under $500 bail on the misdemeanor theft count.
