Two Guatemalans arrested in slaying
NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department arrested two people in the death of a 28-year-old Guatemalan national.
The man was identified as Felipe Cogom Cortez, according to media reports.
Authorities reported the homicide occurred early Saturday morning in the 2900 block of Jerome Road.
Cortez and his two roommates, Juan J. Amperez, 29, and Silvestre C. Alvarado, 29, allegedly had been drinking heavily in the front yard of their mobile home when a fight broke out between Cortez and Amperez.
When the fight ended, Amperez allegedly struck Cortez several times in the head, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said Amperez and Alvardo then attempted to hide Cortez’s body, but a witness called an ambulance to help the victim.
Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office, authorities said.
Both men were booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center.
Amperez faces one count of second-degree murder. Alvarado faces one count of principal to second-degree murder, according to the release. Both men are from Guatemala.
