The public is invited to visit a Civil War winter encampment staged Friday through Sunday at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site in St. Francisville by the 7th Louisiana Re-enactment Group, which participates in the annual Battle of Port Hudson re-enactment.
Union troops occupied the plantation during the Civil War, and visitors will learn how the Turnbull-Bowman family endured the period of Union occupation.
The re-enactors will demonstrate typical camp activities, as well as presenting military drills such as marching, patrolling and military maneuvers.
Heart fair nears
Cardiovascular Institute of the South and Lane Regional Medical Center will hold the third annual Zachary Heart Health Fair from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, offering free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, body mass index and stroke risk assessment.
Hospital staff also will offer guided tours of the new Cardiovascular Center on McHugh Road.
‘Big Read’ continues
The West Feliciana Parish Library continues its “Big Read” activities next week, with Olivia Pass discussing the focus of the reading program, Ernest Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the library.
Pass has been conducting a study of the book as part of a program sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
At 7 p.m. Feb. 19, the Birdman Book Club invites the public to join a discussion of the book at its monthly meeting at the Birdman Café in St. Francisville.
Clerk’s art display
John L. Labbe, of Jackson, is the February artist of the month at the East Feliciana Parish Clerk of Court’s Office in Clinton. His work may be viewed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
‘Kip’ comes calling
Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden brings his “listening tour” to Metro Council District 1 on Monday, joining Councilman Trae Welch at the Zachary branch library, 1900 Church St., from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to stop by and give him an earful.
Little League signings
Baker Little League officials will register children and youths, 4 to 18 years of age, for baseball and softball, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Baker Little League Park, 2637 N. Magnolia Drive. Parents are asked to bring state- or government-issued picture identification, two proofs of address and an original birth certificate for each child.
Victorian workshop
Audubon State Historic Site presents a “Victorian Lady’s Workshop” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, explaining the crafts that a typical Victorian lady might have learned through tutors, teachers or life experience.
Prenatal class offered
Lane Regional Medical Center will offer a free prenatal class at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Staff Development Classroom. “The Pregnancy Workshop” is an overview of what to expect for the soon-to-be mom. Registration is required; call (225) 654-LANE (654-5263).
