BRUSLY — The town’s leaders are launching a crackdown on messy property owners who keep junk cars and debris piled in their yards.
Mayor Joey Normand outlined the plan during a Town Council committee meeting Monday night.
He said each month Police Chief Jamie Whaley will present the council with a list of what he determines to be the top five nuisance offenders.
A series of steps, starting with a verbal warning, will be taken.
The warning will be followed by a registered letter giving the homeowner five days to clean up, Normand said.
Unless the homeowner complies or appeals the citation to the council, the town can then have junk cars towed away or hire a contractor to clean up the property.
“We’ve been talking about nuisance priorities for a long, long time,” Normand said.
“We’re going to try a different tack.”
The process didn’t sit well with Richie Johnson, a Live Oak Drive resident.
He said he was shocked to find his name on a list that a citizens cleanup committee submitted to the police chief for possible attention.
Johnson said the list cited him for tree limbs from Hurricane Gustav and for a truck in his yard.
He said all his vehicles are in good shape and the limbs were awaiting pickup by trash collection crews.
“How did I wind up on that list?” Johnson asked.
