The American Cancer Society and volunteers will host the annual Pointe Coupee Relay For Life event Friday.
Teams sponsored by clubs, churches, businesses and schools will take turns walking around a track to raise cancer awareness. The relays are held overnight and in years past have lasted for 24 hours.
This year’s event will have added significance as participants celebrate local cancer survivors and the good fortune that no Pointe Coupee residents lost their lives after Hurricane Gustav slammed the area Sept. 1.
Opening remarks for Friday’s relay will begin at 6 p.m. at the Scott Civic Center at 1200 Major Parkway in New Roads.
Halloween fun
The West Baton Rouge Library and the parish museum will hold a day of Halloween events Friday.
Magician Greg Boudreaux will entertain at the museum’s “magical courtyard,” followed by refreshments and the “Strumming on the Haunted Bayou” performance by the Lagniappe Dulcimer Society.
Participants can also take a trip through a pumpkin patch filled with nursery rhyme characters, catch the Great Pumpkin Parade with Snoopy and then enjoy a moonlit storytelling experience with professional storyteller Sylvia Davis.
Festivities will begin at 4 p.m. Friday. For more information, phone the museum at (225) 336-2422 or the library at (225) 342-7920.

Join St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in a Feast On The Levee on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The day will start with a special feast Mass at 10 a.m. in the church, followed by live music, a Cajun food fest, cake-baking contest, country store, bingo, silent auction, sweet shop and raffles. For children, there will be Euro Jump, horseshoe competitions and space walks.
