Like other parishes in the Baton Rouge area, Iberville Parish was hit hard by Hurricane Gustav with strong winds, hard rain and 100 percent of residents without power, Iberville Parish President Mitchell Ourso said this morning.

The parish’s emergency preparedness office, in downtown Plaquemine, was damaged with winds peeling off portions of the roof.

“About three fourths of that building is badly damaged,” Ourso said.

Right now, parish officials are gathered in the one area of the building that has not been damaged, the 911 center, Ourso said.

Ourso said the parish’s department of public works building also was damaged by wind.

Still, Iberville DPW workers are out in the streets working to remove tree limbs and other debris, Ourso said.

Ourso said there have been no fatalities in the parish.

If anyone in Iberville Parish needs help, they can call emergency parish officials at (225) 687-5140.
