Authorities arrested an alternative school principal in Iberia Parish on Wednesday morning on drug and counterfeit money charges, officials said.

Darius Sias, 38, was arrested shortly after midnight by investigators in the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division.

Sgt. Wendell Raborn, spokesman for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, said investigators recovered marijuana, cocaine and more than $300 in counterfeit money at a residence in the 300 block of McIlhenny Street in New Iberia.

Sias has been the principal of Lee Street Alternative School for about three years and has been with the school system for 14 years, according to Iberia Parish School Superintendent Dale R. Henderson.

Henderson said Sias has been placed on administrative leave pending resolution of the issue.

Maxine Jones, an assistant principal at Pesson Elementary, has been appointed interim principal of the alternative school.

At the end of the school year, Lee Street Alternative School was renamed the Alternative Center for Education and relocated to a vacant campus on Bank Avenue in New Iberia, Henderson said.

Sias was set to be the principal of the newly renamed school.

Raborn said Sias’ arrest was part of an ongoing narcotics investigation involving drug activity at the home.

Sias faces charges of possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and monetary instrument abuse.

He was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center and released Wednesday afternoon on a $50,000 bond, Raborn said.

Investigators also arrested Derrick Derouen, 29, at the residence. Derouen was released on a summons for possession of marijuana.

Raborn said authorities will contact the U.S. Treasury Department regarding the counterfeit money.
