LAFAYETTE — Lafayette Parish School Superintendent Burnell Lemoine on Wednesday announced that N.P. Moss Middle School will partially reopen in the fall.

He told the Lafayette Parish School Board that about 20 classrooms will be ready for use in the fall and he intends to move the sixth and seventh grades back into the building.

The eighth-grade students assigned to Moss Middle will remain at Northside High School, likely for the entirety of the 2008-09 school year, Lemoine said.

The board moved in late 2007 to temporarily close the school for most, if not all, of the remainder of the school year to deal with water leaks in the walls of the N.P. Moss Middle School, which was built less than 10 years ago.

The students have been split between Northside High School and Good Hope Baptist Church — where the system is paying about $14,000 a month in rent.

Lemoine said he had been informed earlier in the week that most of the common areas of the school and about 20 classrooms would be usable while construction continues next school year, and he informed parents and school administrators Wednesday.

He said parish safety officials have reviewed the plan to partially reoccupy the building next year and declared it safe.

Lemoine said he intends to have Moss Principal Kim Hypolite return to the campus with the sixth- and seventh-graders and have an assistant principal handle the eighth-graders at Northside High School.

Cindy Duhon, who has served as principal at the Good Hope site, will likely return to her original assistant principal job at Broadmoor Elementary School, he said.

Lemoine said that sixth- and seventh-grade teachers have been sharing about 10 classrooms at Good Hope, so the expansion back to 20 will leave plenty of room for teachers and students.

System official have not yet released information on how extensive the repairs are expected to be, nor cost estimates.
