Zachary festival continuing

ZFest 2008 continues in Zachary with games, carnival rides, food booths and entertainment tonight through Saturday at the Zachary Youth Park on Mount Pleasant Road.

Remember that parking for the event will be at Copper Mill Elementary School, LeBlanc’s Payless Supermarket and the Zachary Library. A shuttle bus will move folks to and from the festival every 15 minutes.

Tonight’s entertainment includes Westbound Train, Anita LeBlanc and a talent show. The festival will run from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The sharpest pencil
Helen “Ruthie” Davis, the West Feliciana Parish school system’s business manager, recently received the inaugural “Cypress Award” for career achievement from the Louisiana School Business Officials and kudos from her School Board members. (East Baton Rouge Parish School Superintendent Charlotte Placide and DeSoto Parish’s Steven Stanfield also got the awards).

Davis heads to Florida soon to pick up another award for outstanding service; this one from the corresponding regional association.

Home owner education
A free home ownership education program will be offered by CTV and Associates at 6 p.m. Friday at 19900 La. 964 in Zachary. Potential homeowners are invited to attend.

Benefit softball tourney
Baker Civic Club, a nonprofit organization, is holding a softball tournament fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 17 on the field behind the Baker Little League Park.

Artist of the month
The East Feliciana Parish Clerk of Court’s Office will display the paintings of Carol Shirley during May.

The office is at 12305 St. Helena St., in Clinton, and the hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Hotel dig explained
Archaeologist Robert Mann of LSU will discuss the archaeological investigations of the Royal Hotel site. His presentation is scheduled during the 9:30 a.m. May 14 meeting of Lagniappe in the Felicianas at St. Francisville United Methodist Church.

The Lagniappe organization is a chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU, which is open to adults 50 and older.

Hooray for mom
The Baker Branch Library, 3501 Groom Road, (225) 778-5960, will offer a program at 11 a.m. Saturday during  which children 6-11 will hear stories about mothers and decorate a keepsake box for their mothers. Registration is required; call to see if an opening is available.
