Community cooperation
Business and industry have joined in working with schools and community groups in Iberville Parish during recent weeks.
Here are some examples:

  • Cargill is donating $15,000 to the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board to purchase an Academic Achievement Advancement (A3) software system. District employees can track academic progress of students from school or home, and can identify students with specific learning needs.
  • Employees and contractors at the Placid Refinery in Port Allen donated 102 pints of blood in a United Blood Services drive, including 73 donors in a four-day period, 37 on the final day of the drive.
  • Dow employees in Plaquemine sold almost 3,000 lunches in their annual United Way Jambalaya Cook-off, raising $11,000 for United Way. Nineteen Dow employees participated in “A Day of Caring” at the West Baton Rouge Museum, pressure-washing the main building, planting flowers in the Landry Courtyard and painting the walls of the Whitehead Gallery.
  • East Iberville Industry Neighbor Companies funded counseling by Career Compass for juniors and seniors at East Iberville High School. Students were advised how to apply for college and to prepare for the ACT test as well as bused to LSU to take the test.
  • Dow employee Matthew Machana gave 50 St. John High School students a tour of the company’s labs. During the “Science is Phun” segment the students mixed milk and sugar and added liquid nitrogen to make instant ice cream.
Top Iberville teachers
Marilyn Zito, kindergarten teacher at North Iberville School, was named Elementary Teacher of the Year for Iberville Parish.

Penny Allen, who teaches English, Spanish and French at White Castle School, was named the parish Middle School Teacher of the Year.

Tracy Martin, who teaches business education at East Iberville School, was named High School Teacher of the Year.
All three advance to regional competition.
