The Zachary Community School District holds a 6 p.m. pep rally today at the Zachary High football stadium, not for sports, but to drum up enthusiasm for next week’s state accountability testing program. Prizes will be awarded to the schools with the best attendance and most spirit at the “Let’s Do Great in 2008!” rally.
Free food and drinks will be offered, along with T-shirt giveaways and performances by high school and middle school bands, cheerleaders and dance teams.
Someone, no doubt, will mention that Zachary earned first in the state in last year’s accountability rankings (results were announced Tuesday) for the third consecutive year and that a $25 million school construction bond issue proposal is on the ballot Saturday.
Top scholar honored
Zachary school officials also held a reception last week honoring Miriam Downing, Zachary High’s Student of the Year and a National Merit Scholarship finalist. The Bank of Zachary awarded her a laptop computer for her achievement.
Artists display work
Kathleen B. Simpson and Elizabeth “Penny” Nichols are the artists of the month at the East Feliciana Parish Clerk of Court’s Office. Their work may be seen from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Della Storms and Cheryl Hoyt will display their work at the Zachary Branch Library, 1900 Church St., during March.
Signs of support
Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana’s Chapter 3 will unveil a sign at 3 p.m. Sunday at Parker Park in St. Francisville to show support for the area men and women serving in the military. The public is invited to attend.
Rosedown egg hunt
Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site invites children to a 19th century-style Easter egg hunt at 1 p.m. Saturday. Children are asked to bring their own Easter baskets and meet at the carriage court in front of the home.
Also on Saturday, Rosedown Ranger James Smith will demonstrate from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the ancient art of flint knapping. The event’s location is the field across from the site’s old barn.
Orchestra in town
The Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra will be back in St. Francisville with its Chamber Music Series at 8 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Tickets are available at the Bank of St. Francisville or by calling the orchestra at (225) 383-0500.
Lane offers programs
Lane Regional Medical Center and Total Vein Care offer a free community education seminar at 9 a.m. Monday on “Trends and New Treatments for Venous Disease, Varicose Veins and Deep Vein Thrombosis,” featuring Dr. Albert D. Sam II.
Lane Home Health professionals will provide free blood pressure screenings for participants, and door prizes will be awarded. Registration is required; call (225) 654-5263.
