Some of these closings will change once the storm has passed.

Some school closings announced for area

Schools in the following parishes are closed:
  • Through Wednesday: Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, Lafourche, Livingston, Tangipahoa, St. Helena, St. James, St. Mary, St. Tammany and West Baton Rouge.
  • Today: East Feliciana and Pointe Coupee. 
  • Until further notice: Iberville Parish.
  • Until next week: St. James Parish
  • Indefinitely: Assumption Parish
State universities, colleges remain shut
Colleges and universities closed include:
  • LSU, the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, LSU Agricultural Center, LSU Child Care Center, the LSU Lab School and Southern University are closed through Friday, Sept. 5.
  • Baton Rouge Community College until further notice.
  • Our Lady of the Lake College in Baton Rouge, through Wednesday. Classes at the New Orleans campus are closed all week.
  • Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond closed until Monday.
  • River Parishes Community College in Sorrento, through Wednesday.
  • Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, until further notice.
  • The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, through Wednesday.
  • LSU Eunice, today.
  • In New Orleans, Tulane University, Loyola University and Xavier University, until further notice.
  • McNeese State University, until further notice.
Garbage, recycling collection suspended
Garbage and recycling collection suspensions are as follows:
  • Waste Management, through Wednesday, in East Baton Rouge, Livingston, West and East Feliciana, St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes. When service resumes, Waste Management will pick up only normal household waste and not storm debris.
  • Recycling in East Baton Rouge Parish, today.
  • Allied Waste Services, formerly BFI, business and residential service today in: East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes, and Baker, Denham Springs and Sorrento.
  • Colonial Landfill in Ascension Parish, closed today.
  • Iberville Parish, until further notice.
C-P’s nonessential employees off today
Nonessential city-parish employees should not go to work today, Mayor-President Kip Holden has said.

Essential personnel should check with their supervisors to determine if their services are needed, he said.

Regular business hours at government offices will resume Wednesday morning, when circumstances permit, Holden said.

Ochsner’s health centers closed today
Ochsner’s five health centers in the Capital City area remain closed today.

Ochsner Medical Center-Baton Rouge at Interstate 12 and O’Neal Lane will remain open for emergency and inpatient hospital services.

The following Ochsner Baton Rouge Health Centers are closed until Wednesday:
  • Ochsner Health Center-Bluebonnet, 9001 Summa Ave.
  • Ochsner Health Center-Denham Springs, 30819 La. 16.
  • Ochsner Health Center-Mid-City, 3401 North Blvd., Suite 200.

Curfews in effect in five parishes
Curfews have been ordered in:

  • Ascension Parish, through Tuesday.
  • Livingston Parish, dusk until dawn starting today until further notice.
  • Tangipahoa Parish, including all municipalities except Hammond, ends 5 a.m. today. Hammond has no curfew.
  • St. James Parish, from 9 p.m. Sunday.
  • St. Tammany Parish, from dusk today until dawn Tuesday.

Many La. schools announce closings
Schools in the following parishes are closed:

  • Today through Wednesday: Ascension (including charter schools), Assumption, East Baton Rouge, Lafourche, Livingston, St. Helena, St. James, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and West Baton Rouge.
  • Today and Tuesday: East Feliciana, Pointe Coupee and Tangipahoa.
  • Until further notice: Iberville Parish.

Southern Louisiana colleges shut down
Colleges and universities closed include:

Airport open; most flights canceled
The last flight from Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport left at 10:25 p.m. Sunday before all service was suspended for at least 24 hours.
Only one flight from the four airlines flying into Metro Airport is scheduled today, with all other flights canceled, an airport news release says. A Delta Airlines flight is scheduled to arrive about 11 p.m. today.
Airline service for Tuesday is still tentative, the release says.
The airport itself will remain open throughout Hurricane Gustav’s movement across south Louisiana, the release says.
Passengers can call the airport’s 24-hour information hotline at (225) 358-4260 for details about flight statuses.
The release urges passengers who are scheduled to fly today, Tuesday or Wednesday to check directly with the airline of their choice to get accurate flight status or rebooking for travel arrangements.

Allied Waste Services

Allied Waste Services, formerly BFI, will not be serving business accounts Monday and Tuesday.

Allied also is suspending residential service in the following areas Monday and Tuesday:  East Baton Rouge Parish, West Baton Rouge Parish, Baker, Denham Springs,  Sorrento and Ascension Parish customers.

Colonial Landfill in Ascension Parish will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Service will resume as soon as roads are passable and landfills are open.

Do not place trash or carts at the curb or roadside before the storm, as it may become windblown and cause damage or obstruct drainage. After the storm, residents should pile tree limbs and trash separately from garbage.

Metro Airport flights

The last in-bound or out-bound flight scheduled to leave Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport will leave at 10:25 p.m. today before all service is suspended for at least 24 hours in advance of Hurricane Gustav.

The Baton Rouge Concert Band Labor Day performance is canceled. It was to begin at 7 p.m. Monday on the steps of the Capitol.

Whole Foods will close at 8 p.m. will not reopen until Wednesday.

Garbage and recycling collection in East Baton Rouge Parish will be suspended Monday and Tuesday.

Air service at Baton Rouge Metro airport will be suspended Sunday afternoon until further notice.

Baton Rouge Community College will remain closed through Wednesday, Sept. 3, classes will resume Thursday, Sept. 4.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 2 and 3.

Tangipahoa Parish
Tangipahoa Parish School Board and committee meetings previously scheduled Tuesday evening are cancelled,

West Baton Rouge Parish
Meet the Candidates forum slated for Sept. 4 postponed, will be rescheduled.

Waste Management
No garbage collection Tuesday, Sept. 2, and Wednesday, Sept. 3 for East Baton Rouge, Livingston, West and East Feliciana, St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes.

LSU will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 2, and Wednesday, Sept. 3. All classes, public events and related activities at LSU are suspended.

Louisiana School for the Deaf
Schools will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired
Schools will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 2.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette announced Saturday night it will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Southern University
Southern University and A&M University Chancellor Dr. Kofi Lomotey announced Friday evening that the Baton Rouge campus will
be closed Tuesday, Sept. 2 as Hurricane Gustav threatens the Louisiana coast.

Baton Rouge Community College
Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) will hold regular classes on Saturday, August 30, 2008. Immediately following Saturday classes the college will be closed. Classes will resume as scheduled on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 beginning at 7 a.m., weather permitting.

Southeastern Louisiana University
Southeastern Louisiana University will cancel classes and events and close its main campus and off-site locations on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and Wednesday, Sept. 3.

University Lab School
Due to the threat posed by Tropical Storm Gustav, the University Lab School will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

East Baton Rouge Parish Library
Due to Tropical Storm Gustav, all locations of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will close early on Saturday, August 30, at 4:00 p.m.  The Library will remain closed on Sunday, August 31 and Monday, September 1.For more information, call (225) 231-3710.

U.S. District Courthouse
All offices in the U.S. District Courthouse in Baton Rouge will be closed Tuesday due to the storm, and will open Wednesday, barring any hurricane-related problems, a courthouse spokeswoman said today. The offices were already scheduled to close Monday for Labor Day.

Louisiana State University
All classes, public events and related activities at LSU are suspended on Tuesday, Sept. 2

Loyola University New Orleans
Classes canceled Friday, Aug. 29, classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 2

Xavier University
Closing at noon Friday, Aug. 29, classes resume Thursday, Sept. 4

Tulane University
Closing at noon Friday, Aug. 29, business operations will resume Wednesday, Sept. 3, classes will resume Thursday, Sept. 4.

LSU Eunice
