Cost-saving idea underestimated

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne’s suggestion to save $10,000 to $15,000 by reducing some pre-election early voting opportunities elicited another cost-saving idea from a legislator.

House Speaker Pro-tem Karen Peterson, D-New Orleans, suggested that the joint House and Senate Governmental Affairs Committees could have one less meeting.

“That would save about $2,000,” Peterson said.

Peterson undershot her computation.

Twenty lawmakers attended Thursday’s session, cumulatively drawing more than $3,000 in per diem. Each lawmaker gets $159 a day for non-session committee meetings.

Blanco recollects Treen connection

Former Gov. Dave Treen’s memorial service in the State Capitol on Monday prompted former Gov. Kathleen Blanco to remember another emotional time for the Treen family.

In 1999, Treen’s grandson, Jason Stewart Neville, disappeared during an Oregon hiking trip.

Blanco was lieutenant governor at the time. She and her husband, Raymond “Coach,” were mourning the recent death of their son, Ben.

“My heart dropped,” she  said of learning about Neville’s disappearance.

Blanco said she called Treen and offered to line up a private plane for his family to fly to Oregon. She also offered a crisis manager: Coach Blanco.

She said her husband spent several harrowing days with the Treens in Oregon, forging a bond between the two families.
