Wilson mayor recall petition valid, sent to Jindal

CLINTON — East Feliciana Parish Registrar of Voters Edwin Lea McGehee said a petition submitted Friday has enough valid signatures for Gov. Bobby Jindal to call a special election on the question of recalling Wilson Mayor Joshua L. Thomas.

McGehee said he mailed the petition to the Governor’s Office on Monday after determining it was signed by 175 voters registered in Wilson.

The organizers, who began the petition drive Aug. 3, needed 166 valid signatures, or 40 percent of village’s 415 registered voters, McGehee said.

Thomas, 25, took office July 1, but recall drive Chairman Timothy Perry said Thomas will not cooperate with the Board of Aldermen and some voters question whether he lives in Wilson.

McGehee said he honored the Friday requests of two voters to have their names removed from the petition, but had to turn down several people who tried Monday to add their names to the petition because he had already certified it contained at least 40 percent of the eligible voters.

A number of signatures were not counted because the signers did not live in the village or were not registered to vote, the registrar said.

Louisiana law requires Jindal to issue a proclamation within 15 days of receiving the petition setting a special election at the next available election date.

Voters would cast ballots for or against the recall.
