Three-time Southern University System Chairman Johnny Anderson and the Rev. Jesse Bilberry, of Baton Rouge, were removed from the Southern Board of Supervisors on Thursday by Gov. Bobby Jindal.

They were replaced by lawyers Walter Dumas and Murphy Bell Jr., of Baton Rouge. The six-year terms of Anderson and Bilberry expired at the end of 2008.

Outgoing board Chairman Myron Lawson, of Alexandria, was reappointed by Jindal.

When reached for comment Thursday night, Anderson said he is not bitter and he accepts the prerogative of the governor to replace on the board.

“I am concerned about Southern’s future with some of the leadership,” Anderson said. “But Southern is strong enough to persevere.”

Anderson, who was former Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s assistant chief of staff, served as Southern chairman in 2005, 2006 and a rare third year in 2007.

Anderson frequently butted heads with Southern University System President Ralph Slaughter.

Anderson also supported hiring former interim Southern Chancellor Margaret Ambrose instead of new Chancellor Kofi Lomotey, who was recommended by Slaughter and his chancellor search committee.

Bilberry, who has been one of the quieter board members in recent years, was first appointed to the board in 1989. He was replaced in 1995, but was later put back on the board.

Dumas, a major Southern donor and graduate, is president of Dumas & Associates Law Firm and a member of the Southern University System Foundation.

Dumas will serve as an at-large member in Bilberry’s place.

Dumas also recently served on the chancellor search committee that resulted in hiring Lomotey.

Bell is a partner with Jackson-Bell Attorneys at Law and serves on the regional board of directors for Teach for America. Bell replaces Anderson as a representative of the 6th Congressional District.
