Kennedy attacks Landrieu in TV ad
Republican John Kennedy launched a statewide television commercial Thursday that says U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., voted with Democrat presidential nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., 81 percent of the time.
Kennedy, who is state treasurer, is challenging Landrieu’s Nov. 4 re-election bid. The presidential contest is on the same election ballot.
Landrieu’s campaign disputed the claims made in Kennedy’s ad.
“John Kennedy’s new attack is an obvious ploy to try to win conservative voters who still don’t trust him,” said Scott Schneider, Landrieu’s campaign spokesman.
“On abortion Landrieu votes with Obama,” the 30-second spot says.
“On tax hikes Landrieu votes with Obama,” it says. “On confirming conservative judges Landrieu voted no, just like Obama.”
Kennedy’s commercial says that Obama “doesn’t represent Louisiana’s values and neither does Mary Landrieu.”
“I’m John Kennedy. I’m for John McCain and I approve this message,” the ad says, a reference to the GOP presidential nominee, a U.S. senator from Arizona.
The Democrat’s campaign also issued a prepared statement that said Landrieu was rated as the ideological center of the U.S. Senate in 2008 by National Journal magazine.
The news release also says Congressional Quarterly listed Landrieu as among the most independent members of the Senate. That magazine said she broke ranks with her party more than any other member of the Louisiana delegation in 2007.
Kennedy’s campaign is also launching a new Web site, http://www.LandrieuObama.com, that draws comparisons between the two.
Landrieu is seeking her third term.
