Cazayoux visits old stomping grounds

U.S. Rep. Don Cazayoux, a former member of the state House, returned to his old chamber last week to greet former colleagues.

House Speaker Jim Tucker, R-Terrytown, was on the dais with Democrat Cazayoux when Rep. Avon Honey, D-Baton Rouge, noted that Cazayoux made a failed bid for speaker last year.

“Mr. Speaker, I just want to say Don Cazayoux finally made it to the speaker’s (chair),” Honey said to laughter in the House.

“The Lord works in mysterious ways,” Tucker replied.

Cazayoux won election last month to represent Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District.

Cassidy considers Congressional bid

State Sen. Bill Cassidy said Friday that he is considering a run for the 6th Congressional District seat this fall.

Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, said he was approached earlier this year when the seat was vacated by former U.S. Rep. Richard Baker, who resigned before finishing his two-year term.

Democrat Don Cazayoux won the seat for the remainder of the term but will have to run again in the fall to keep it for a full, two-year term.

Cassidy said people again started asking him about the possibility of running after Cazayoux’s win.

The Republicans need a strong candidate in the race, Cassidy said, and he sees the election as a chance to serve his country as it faces some serious issues.

But the person who kept him from running the first time is still a serious factor in his decision now — his 6-year-old daughter, who misses seeing her father. Cassidy, a physician, also has an 11-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son.
