Police book Slaughter man in auto parts theft
BAKER — Police arrested a Slaughter man Monday accused of stealing parts for a vintage Jeep that its owner was restoring, Police Chief Mike Knaps said in a news release.
The theft occurred Sept. 16, and police obtained surveillance video from a nearby business that showed a man loading the parts — valued at about $5,000 — into a truck.
The video was aired on Baton Rouge television stations in hopes that someone would recognize the man or the truck, Knaps said.
On Monday, the Police Department received a Crime Stoppers tip that led officers to Steven Paul Mayeaux, 54, at 2271 Midway Road, Slaughter, Knaps said.
Detectives found a truck in the driveway that matched the vehicle shown in the video, and Mayeaux admitted during questioning to stealing the parts and selling them to a scrap metal dealer.
Police booked Mayeaux at Parish Prison on one count of felony theft, Knaps said.
