Assumption felon booked with theft
LABADIEVILLE — Deputies arrested a convicted felon Monday after he was seen picking up a .40-caliber pistol lying in the street near a church and putting it in his pocket, according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Albert Williams, 56, also known as “Peter Rabbit,” was arrested and booked with theft of a firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of firearm, deputies said in a statement Tuesday.
Williams, no address given, of Labadieville, has a 2001 drug conviction, deputies said.
A Charter Communications employee had spotted the gun on the ground in Convent Street near St. Philomena Catholic Church on Monday, deputies said.
The employee called deputies and was reportedly guarding the Glock pistol when he saw Williams walk by and pick up the gun, deputies said.
After Williams was disarmed and arrested near the Labadieville bridge Monday, the pistol’s owner reported it missing, deputies said.
Williams remained in Assumption Parish Detention Center in Napoleonville late Tuesday morning awaiting bond, deputies said.
In the statement Tuesday, deputies did not explain how the weapon ended up on the ground in the Convent Street neighborhood.
