Baker man shot to death
BAKER — Detectives had few clues as they began investigating the shooting death early Tuesday of a Baker man, the first homicide in the city in more than two years, a Police Department spokesman said.
Officers found Jeremiah Gibson, 24, dead in the front yard of a residence near the intersection of Jefferson and Johnson streets after responding to a 3 a.m. report of shots fired in the area, police Lt. James Broussard said.
The caller also reported that a man was lying in the yard, and Gibson, who lived nearby on Daniels Street, died shortly after police arrived, Broussard said.
The slaying was the city’s first homicide since Feb. 14, 2007, when a man shot and killed his brother during an argument at a Plaza Street residence, which also is near Tuesday’s shooting scene.
Broussard said police did not find any bullet casings at the scene or any evidence to suggest robbery could have been a motive for the slaying.
Detectives were checking a report that Gibson was involved with an altercation several weeks ago at a local store, Broussard said.
Police Chief Mike Knaps said anyone who may have information that would assist investigators is asked to call the Police Department at (225) 775-6000.
“We can’t bring the young man back to life, but we’d sure like to solve the case,” Knaps said.
