Woman arrested after report of child alone in parking lot
HAMMOND — Officers arrested a mother after her 18-month-old child was found wandering in the parking lot of a motel/video bingo parlor in 35-degree weather late Monday night, the Police Department reported Wednesday.
Kimberly Briggs, 22, 1529 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford, R.I., was arrested on a single count of criminal abandonment and her child was taken to a foster home by the state Office of Community Services, according to a police report.
A witness reported to police that she found the child in The Inn’s parking lot wearing a thin nightie and a pair of socks just 10 feet from U.S. 190, a busy commercial thoroughfare in Hammond, police said.
Around 10 p.m., police found the unattended second-floor room used by Briggs and her boyfriend, who is the father of the child, with the door open, the playpen and baby bed empty and a daiquiri on the room table, police said.
The officer left the parents a note telling them to call police when they arrived. Briggs called police about 2 a.m. Tuesday asking where her child was, police said.
When police spoke with her, she first told officers she had asked someone to watch her child around 9:30 p.m. Monday when she left to pick up her boyfriend from work, police said.
Later she admitted the story was false and she had left the child alone in the playpen in the room, which was up a flight of stairs, Lt. Vincent Giannobile, Police Department spokesman, said Wednesday.
After going down the stairs, officers believe, the child walked about 60 feet to 70 feet through the parking lot. Briggs admitted she had been drinking and taking medicine Monday, police said.
Giannobile said the father was not arrested because he was working at the time of the incident.
