Fire destroys bar, cafe near False River
A fire early Thursday destroyed Benny’s Bar & Café, 15210 La. 416, in the Pointe Coupee Parish community of Glynn near False River, fire officials said Thursday.
Capt. Mark Jack, of Pointe Coupee Volunteer Fire Department District 5, one of several departments to respond, said the first call of the blaze came in at 8:44 a.m. Thursday.
“The call was for a large structure fire,” Jack said.
“There was a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the roof. It started in a back storeroom area.”
The fire was under control by 11:30 a.m., Jack said. He estimated damage at between $50,000 and $80,000.
He said the bar and café opened 18 months to two years ago and that the owner had put a lot of work into getting the business going.
Jack said the fire started in a backroom storage area. Assistant Fire Chief Huey Cash of Pointe Coupee Volunteer Fire Department District 3 said the cause is still under investigation.
“Given the extent of the damage, it’s going to be awfully hard to determine the cause, but it’s probably going to be some kind of electrical or mechanical problem,” Cash said.
The one-story building included a wood structure restaurant and kitchen and an adjacent metal lounge and bar area, he said.
Cash said owner Rickey Rivet told firefighters and others at the scene that he plans to rebuild and reopen as soon as possible.
Pointe Coupee Fire Protection District 3 was assisted by firefighters from District 5 and from Erwinville and West Baton Rouge volunteer departments.
He said seven pumpers, one ladder truck, a tanker, service vehicle and 37 firefighters battled the blaze.
