Man dies after chase with police
ZACHARY — A Centreville, Miss., man died Thanksgiving Day after a 15-minute vehicle and foot chase with Zachary police.
Randall Earl West Jr. was pronounced dead at Lane Regional Medical Center, Police Chief John Herty said. West was about 30 years old, he said.
The chase between West and police began at 8:18 a.m. Thursday, Herty said, after police received a call from a driver who had been hit by a silver vehicle on La. 964 at Feliciana Crossing subdivision, which is in East Feliciana Parish near the East Baton Rouge Parish line.
West, the driver of the silver vehicle, fled and turned left onto La. 64, Herty said.
Police chased West east along La. 64 to La. 19 and south into Baker, he said.
The pursuit continued east along Baker Boulevard to Plank Road.
When West saw a roadblock Baker police had set up at Plank Road’s intersection with Groom and Pettit roads, he tried to make a left turn onto Pettit but hit a northbound vehicle stopped in the turning lane, Herty said.
After the crash, West’s vehicle came to a stop in front of the Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits Restaurant on Plank Road in Baker, Herty said.
West managed to get out of the vehicle and run to a parking lot behind the restaurant before slipping and falling to the ground, he said.
When police handcuffed West, they found a rock of crack cocaine in his hand, Herty said.
Police also noticed that West was breathing heavily and having convulsions.
The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but the autopsy results were not available Friday.
Herty said West did not have any outstanding arrest warrants.
