NAPOLEONVILLE — A Mexican citizen died in a car wreck about 11 p.m. Sunday on La. 1 in the Napoleonville area, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

Armando Santiago Luencas, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a rear passenger in a 1994 Volkswagen driven by Rodolfo Saul Torres Sanchez, 31, according to police.

Sanchez was driving south on La. 1 at a high rate of speed and lost control of his vehicle going around a curve, according to the news release. Authorities said Sanchez overcorrected, left the road and struck a house at 4966 La. 1. The vehicle then overturned and landed on a fence. The front seat passenger, Joel Dela Cruz, 24, of Mexico, received critical injuries and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, according to the release.

Sanchez, who received minor injuries, was booked into the Assumption Parish prison with first-offense DWI, vehicular homicide, vehicular injuring, reckless operation, no driver’s license, and operating a vehicle without a lawful presence in the United States.
