Link suspected in robberies of drive-ins

PONCHATOULA — There may be a link between armed robberies less than a week apart of Sonic Drive-In restaurants in Ponchatoula and Hammond, Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said Tuesday.
Officers searched Tuesday for two men who robbed a Sonic Drive-In on Ponchatoula’s main drag Sunday night, according to a Ponchatoula Police Department statement.
Described as black men wearing sweat shirts, masks and gloves, the two robbers held employees at gunpoint after going through the front door of the Sonic at 753 W. Pine St., about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police said in a statement.
One robber was wearing a black-hooded sweat shirt; the other a gray sweat shirt. They took $4,012, police said.
Layrisson said Tuesday that the Ponchatoula Sonic robbery is similar to the Nov. 10 armed robbery of another Sonic Drive-In about five miles away on West Thomas Street in Hammond.
He said the two drive-ins have the same owner.
A reward is being offered for information leading to the robbers’ arrest and conviction. Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call the Ponchatoula Police Department at (985) 386-6548 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 554-5245.
