A 44-year-old man was arrested Sunday for allegedly beating another man to death over a dispute about a food-stamp card, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office official said Thursday.

Neal Wade Huff beat Roy Breland, 45, with a stick about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 30 outside the Racetrac gasoline station at 7102 Siegen Lane, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. Breland died from his wounds six days later,  she said.

Deputies responded to the beating at the convenience store but were turned away by Breland, who refused treatment from paramedics and was uncooperative with law enforcement, Hicks said.

Breland was taken to the hospital the next day, and his family contacted the Sheriff’s Office on Sunday after Breland died, Hicks said.

During their investigation into the beating, deputies determined that both Breland and Huff were homeless and were arguing Sept. 30 over a food-stamp card, Hicks said.

During the argument, Huff picked up a stick and beat Breland, she said. Huff admitted to deputies that he beat Breland but told them he did not intend to kill  him,  Hicks said.

Huff was booked into Parish Prison on a count of manslaughter, booking records show.
