A University of Central Florida football player and former Redemptorist High School standout was shot and wounded early Friday during a visit home to Baton Rouge, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

An officer responding to a call of shots fired in the 3700 block of Wyandotte Street at 2:30 a.m. was told by a resident that a man had been shot and then was driven in a private car to a hospital, police spokesman Capt. Lazarus Turner said in a news release.

McKneely confirmed that Johnell Neal, 22, was shot several times in the upper body while standing in the front lawn of a house at 3755 Wyandotte St.

McKneely said Neal was in stable condition Friday evening.

“He’s just in a lot of pain,” McKneely said.

Neal, a cornerback who in 2006 became the first defensive back to lead Central Florida in tackles, graduated from Redemptorist in 2004.

A call to Guy Mistretta, Redemptorist High head football coach, was not returned late Friday.

Detectives were exploring some possible leads Friday, McKneely said, but anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to call the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Major Assaults Division at (225) 389-3844 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
