ST. AMANT — A stretch of Black Bayou Road was closed Friday because of a propane leak, said the director of the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Rick Webre said Black Bayou, or La. 934, between O’Neal and Roddy roads was closed about 7 p.m. Thursday but reopened in time for commuters’ drives home about 4 p.m. Friday.

The leak of the flammable, but not poisonous, propane occurred when a contractor was dismantling a water treatment facility owned by the city of Gonzales on Black Bayou Road and Hilbert Young Road, Webre said. Residents were not at risk, as the nearest house is about 300 yards from the tank that was leaking, Webre said.

Webre said the State Police Haz-Mat team, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the 7th District Volunteer Fire Department were on site, along with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Flaring off the leaking propane began Thursday night and was completed this morning, Webre said.

State Police said the cleanup had been completed and Black Bayou Road reopened.
