Police officer shot at McKinley party

A Baton Rouge police officer was shot in the right leg early Sunday morning while working extra duty at a dance party, a police news release says.

The shooting occurred at 12:10 a.m. at the McKinley High School Alumni Center at 1533 Thomas H. Delpit, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely Jr. said in the release.

The officer, a 34-year-old veteran of the force who was not named by police, was hit when shots were fired from an unknown direction, McKneely said. The officer was treated and released from Baton Rouge General Hospital, McKneely said.

Nine people booked on EBR DWI counts

Authorities arrested at least nine people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into the Parish Prison between 3 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday booking records show.

The people booked and the counts against them:

-- Charles Yates, 20, 2750 Millerville Road, No. 10200, first-offense DWI, driving on a suspended driver’s license and failure to main control.

-- Felton David Gaines, 58, Maple Street, Lottie, first-offense DWI, improper lane usage.

-- Jorge Sanchez Benitez, 40, 7712 Morel Lane, Ventress, first-offense DWI, improper lane usage.

-- Jacob Israel Jett, 26, 30964 Walls Lane, Denham Springs, first-offense DWI, failure to maintain control.

-- Christopher Laury, 23, 7434 Proxie Drive, first-offense DWI, insurance required, possession of marijuana, failure to maintain control, open container.
