Bus Safety Tips
The Tangipahoa Parish Public School System recommends the following tips to keep students safe on buses.
Parents and guardians:
Provide the driver with emergency phone numbers and information about special care the student will need while riding the bus.
Arrive at the bus stop at the designated time and supervise the child until the bus arrives.
Secure the child into any specialized carrying equipment before the child boards the bus.
Meet the bus at the bus stop at the specified arrival time after school.
Notify the bus driver if the child will not be in school.
Help keep the loading area free of trash and debris.
Keep bus turnarounds and lanes clear of parked cars and garbage cans.
Call the school if the parents are not able to meet the bus after school and give the name of the person that will be there to meet the driver.
Cooperate with bus drivers in teaching children safety precautions and good manners.
Read and follow local board and school level transportation policies.
Students:
Listen to the driver.
Be on time.
Look both ways when crossing the road.
Wait for driver’s instructions when boarding and leaving the bus.
Remain quiet.
Obtain the principal’s permission to be dropped off at a different bus stop.
Be courteous and safety conscious.
Remain seated at all times.
Do not extend arms, head or other objects or throw objects out of the windows and doors.
Do not use the emergency door unless there is an emergency.
Do not eat or drink on the bus.
Do not mark on, take apart, cut, tear, or abuse the bus interior or the seat covers.
Do not use or possess the following items: tobacco, matches, cigarette lighters, obscene material, alcohol, illegal drugs, pets, glass objects, weapons and objects too big to be held in one’s lap or placed under the seat.
