Area Christian athletes to hold annual banquet
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold its annual banquet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Chesterton Square special event facility in Ponchatoula.
The event spotlights nearly 4,000 college, high school, and middle-school student-athletes who belong to FCA in Livingston, St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes. It also honors faculty sponsors who serve as huddle coaches.
This year’s event is billed as “The Spike Spangler Memorial FCA Banquet” in memory of the former Hammond native who was a graduate of Southeastern Lab High School and Southeastern Louisiana University. He was also a teacher and basketball coach at Amite and Live Oak High schools and a dedicated volunteer staff member with FCA District 4, which oversees activities within the three-parish area.
The featured speaker is Warren Bankston, a Hammond native, a graduate of Hammond High School and Tulane University where he was a star quarterback. Bankston then became a second-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed a 10-year NFL career as a tight end, highlighted by a Super Bowl championship when he played with the Oakland Raiders. Elected co-captain four of six seasons by Raider teammates, Bankston was later inducted into both the Tulane University and Nokia Sugar Bowl Halls of Fame.
Former Southeastern Louisiana University Football Coach and Athletic Director Oscar Lofton will be the master of ceremonies.
Lofton, who played tight end for the original NFL Boston Patriots and later coached Hammond High School to the AAA state championship in 1970, ended his athletic career as a longtime college football talent scout for the San Francisco 49ers.
The public is invited.
Tickets must be purchased in advance by Wednesday through participating huddles or at:
