WALKER — Glenn Westmoreland announced he is a candidate in the Oct. 4 primary election to fill the Division I open seat on the 21st Judicial District Court bench.

The new judgeship was created to preside over Juvenile Court cases in Livingston, Tangipahoa and St. Helena parishes.

“I’m running to protect our children, families, and community,” Westmoreland said. “I offer solid judgment that follows the rule of law. I will not make laws from the bench.”

Westmoreland, who has practiced law since 1984, served as a part-time assistant district attorney in 1988 and 1989. The 45-year-old Republican said that while an assistant district attorney, he prosecuted thousands of criminal cases.

“I’ve seen the damaging effects of drugs on our community,” he said.

Westmoreland said he would, if elected, expand the 21st Judicial District’s drug court program, and work with Court Appointed Special Advocates “to put a shield around our children.”

Westmoreland said that during his law career, he has represented clients in hundreds of cases involving juvenile, family, and domestic matters.

Westmoreland is a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, American Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, and the United States District Courts for Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana. He is also a member of Keep Livingston Beautiful.

Westmoreland graduated from Albany High School in 1979, from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1982, and earned his Juris Doctorate from LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1985.

“My commitment to the citizens of this community is deep,” he said. “This is my home.”

Westmoreland said he would be “fair but firm with juvenile offenders,” defend the community’s conservative values, and offer equality for all in his courtroom.

Westmoreland lives north of Walker with his wife, JoAnn. Together, they have eight children.
