Two at Hammond High win national scholarships
Thimal de Alwis and Abigail Reyes, both of Hammond High School, were among 55 Louisiana high school graduates to receive the 2008 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, the state superintendent of education announced last month.
“Competition for the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship award gets tougher each year, with this year’s winners exhibiting an exceptionally high level of academic achievement,” State Superintendent of Education Paul G. Pastorek said. “The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education members join me in wishing the Byrd scholars much success now and in their future academic experience.”
An 11-member selection committee representing Board of Elementary and Secondary Education reviewed applications and selected the most-outstanding students to receive the awards. The applicants were evaluated on their academic achievement, leadership potential, communication skills, and school and community involvement.
To be eligible for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, applicants must have completed the required state minimum high school graduation requirements by the end of the 2008 academic year. Scholars must have earned a GPA of 3.5 and have an ACT Composite Score of 23 or SAT Critical Reading and Math Score of 970. Among the Louisiana recipients were seven students who completed a general education diploma program.
