Pets show off fashions at Denham Springs show

DENHAM SPRINGS — At a fashion show for pets, held as part of the Antique Village Fall Festival on Saturday, it may have been hard for the judges to pick the winners.

All of the pet entries were show stoppers.

Among the many contestants were Teddy Wag, a Shih Tzu dressed as a ladybug — with a red bow tie that told the world he was really a boy ladybug, his owner Barbara Simmons said.

“This is his first time, and he’s very excited,” Simmons said.

The “Barktober Fashions” event was presented by Bark Avenue Pet Salon in Denham Springs to benefit the Humane Society of Livingston Parish.

Robin Grantham, the owner of the pet salon, said the show raised a little over $500 for the local Humane Society.

Plus, three dogs brought to the event by the Human Society were adopted, she said.

Other contestants vying for trophies in the pet fashion show were Lani, a black-and-white rabbit, dressed as a princess in pink and wearing tiny pink sunglasses; Pepito, a Chihuahua, sporting a Mexican poncho and a straw sombrero; and Patrick, a huge black Great Dane, wearing camouflage.

“He’s only 8 months old,” said Patrick’s owner, Dorothy Vazquez, of the big dog that weighed 125 pounds just a few weeks earlier.

“His dad was 200 (pounds) and his mom was 185,” Vazquez said.

Each of the pets got to trot on a leash across the stage at the Train Station Pavilion.

The very first one was Sugababe, a dwarf Yorkshire terrier outfitted in a purple and gold cheerleader’s outfit.

While all of the contestants won applause and laughter from the audience, it was the judges who made the hard decisions. First place went to Pepito (the one in the Mexican poncho), owned by Patty Abadie; second place went to Jazz, a Pomeranian owned by Angie Curtis; and third place went to Patrick, the big Great Dane.
