Running for Office: City Court Judge Division B
Donald Dobbins has announced that he is running for the Baton Rouge City Court Division B seat.
Dobbins, 48, is a Democrat and an attorney who has practiced law for almost two decades, according to his candidate announcement.
The election is slated for May 2. If a runoff is necessary, it will be held May 30. Division B covers the western-most part of the city limits from Thomas Road to south of Lee Drive.
Dobbins has pledged to make City Court more user friendly and to develop more alternative sentences that will save taxpayers money.
Dobbins also said in his announcement that he wants to start a mentoring program for young offenders who would appear before him in court and that would prevent them from leaping from misdemeanor court to facing more serious charges.
Some of those methods include: curfews, home monitoring, more house arrest and probation, Dobbins said.
Dobbins has a bachelor’s degree from Southern University and juris doctorate degree from Southern University Law Center.
Dobbins is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Louis Martinet Society. He is also a longtime member of Gloryland Baptist Church.
Dobbins said he has an “untiring commitment for equal justice for all, and is a true believer that everybody is somebody.”
Dobbins has five opponents in the race. Four opponents are Democrats, Kevin “Lovell” James, Tarvald Anthony Smith, Kelli Terrell Temple, and Arthur R. Thomas. Republican Durinda Robinson is also running in the race.
The seat became vacant when former City Court Judge Trudy White was elected state district judge in October.
