Lawyer Kelli Terrell Temple has announced her candidacy to become the next Baton Rouge City Court judge.

Temple, 40, is a Democrat seeking the Division B seat.

The election is scheduled for May 2. If a runoff is necessary, it will be held May 30. Division B covers the western-most part of the city limits from Thomas Road to south of Lee Drive.

Temple has a private law practice and works as a real estate broker, according to her candidate announcement.

Temple said in her announcement that, if elected,  she will issue rulings based on fair, compassionate and sound judgment within the confines of the law.

Temple also said in the announcement that the court system “must remain always objective, even in highly volatile situations.”

Temple is a 1986 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern University in 1990 and a law degree from LSU in 2000.

Temple is a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, the  Baton Rouge Bar Association, the Greater Baton Rouge Board of Realtors, the Junior League of Baton Rouge and she volunteers with the St. Vincent De Paul Society and Girl Scouts of America.

Temple has worked previously as a congressional office manager in Washington, D.C., a field auditor intern for the Louisiana Department of Revenue and Taxation, and as a law clerk for the state attorney general.

Temple is married to Collis B. Temple Jr. and the mother of a 6-year-old daughter.

Temple is facing off against five candidates in the race. Four of the other candidates are Democrats: Donald Dobbins, Kevin “Lovell” James, Tarvald Anthony Smith and Arthur R. Thomas.

Durinda Robinson, a Republican, is also running for the judgeship.

The judicial seat became vacant when former City Court Judge Trudy White was elected state district judge in October.
