VACHERIE — Attorney Jude Gravois announced his candidacy for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeal, saying he “is ready to put more than three decades of legal experience and expertise to work from day one” on the court.

Gravois, a 55-year-old Democrat, is running in the April 4 election to fill the seat representing St. James Parish and the east bank of St. John the Baptist Parish.

He is opposed by Democrat Mary Hotard Becnel, 59, of Laplace, a judge in the 40th Judicial District.

“I have actively practiced law in this part of the state for more than 30 years, handling thousands of legal matters of almost every type imaginable for a diverse group of clients,” Gravois said.

“As judge I’ll draw upon my wide and varied legal experience to make decisions that are fair and right. I’ll put my understanding of our local people and deep appreciation and pride of our unique heritage and culture to work for you,” he said.

Gravois said he has prosecuted criminals as an assistant district attorney and “served as an indigent defender providing legal counsel to people who could not afford a lawyer.

“I’ve represented public bodies, including the St. James Parish Council, School Board and Lafourche Levee District. My clients come from all walks of life and I have helped them with domestic, criminal, estate, probate, property and business matters, among others,” Gravois said.

He has served two terms as president of the 23rd Judicial District Bar Association and heads its annual Christmas toy drive.

Additionally, he served as a member of the House of Delegates to the State Bar Association and was chairman of the St. James Parish Notarial Commission for more than 30 years.

Gravois was awarded the Louisiana Bar Association’s Crystal Gavel Award for his service to the community and legal profession.

He is married and the father of two children. Gravois, a member of the Knights of Columbus, attends Our Lady of Peace and St. Philip Catholic churches.

“I have a deep understanding of how our judicial system works and how it can better serve our citizens,” Gravois said. “My vast legal experience uniquely qualifies me to review cases and pass judgment on courtroom decisions.”
