Running for Office: Louisiana 5th Circuit Court of Appeal

LAPLACE — State District Judge Mary Hotard Becnel is running for the Louisiana 5th Circuit Court of Appeal, saying “it is important to have a person who understands and respects our way of life” serving in that court.
The 5th Circuit judgeship represents St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes. The election, to fill the seat vacated by Judge Tom Daley, is scheduled for April 4.
Becnel, a 59-year-old Democrat from LaPlace, is chief judge of the 40th Judicial District Court. She has served in that court since 1993.
“It is essential to have an appeals judge who has experience as a trial judge, one who understands the dynamics of decision-making,” she said.
Becnel has worked in the courts 40 years, first as a court reporter, then as a lawyer and as a judge.
She is a graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, where she was a member of the law review, and the University of New Orleans.
Becnel is a member of the American and Louisiana Bar associations, the National Association of Women Judges, a fellow in the Louisiana Bar Foundation and serves on the executive committee of the Louisiana District Judges Association.
She has represented clients for the Indigent Defender Program and Capital Area Legal Services.
Becnel also is active in community and social work, having established a program to address the behavior of juvenile girls and created a truancy court for St. John the Baptist Parish.
Additionally, Becnel advises the Children and Youth Planning Board, supports Student Arts Programs and is a founding and active board member of the River Region Arts and Humanities Council.
Becnel is married to Daniel E. Becnel Jr. and has two sons, two stepsons and five grandchildren.
She attends St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.
