Moses Evans Jr. said he’s running for the office of Justice of the Peace, Ward 2, District 3, because he sees it as an opportunity to serve people.

“And give them better services as justice of the peace,” Evans said.

Evans, 44, is running against fellow Democrats Maurice Franks and Vernell Haynes.

The district is bordered on the north by Dyer Road, the south by Prescott Road, the Comite River on the east and Southern University on the west.

Evans, a retired Baton Rouge Police Department corporal, retired in 1993 after 11 years with the department. He works as a licensed public investigator and notary public.

He also was president of the Alsen-St. Irma Lee Fire Department Board and was an instructor with the East Baton Rouge Parish Adult Education Program, according to his campaign announcement.

He is a member of the Alsen Environment Justice Community Organization, a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, president of the Scotlandville Million Man March Association and a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts

of America Troop 1902, according to his campaign announcement.

He has run for other public offices, most recently in 2004 for the Metro Council District 2 seat.

Evans is the son of retired Baton Rouge Police Maj. Moses Evans Sr. and Sarah Stampley, a retired school teacher.
