Baton Rouge lawyer Dan Claitor, a former assistant district attorney in Orleans Parish, says his prosecutorial experience would serve him well if elected district attorney of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Claitor, a graduate of LSU and Loyola University Law School in New Orleans, has 21 years of legal experience.

“Since Hurricane Katrina, our community has become a big city with big-city crime,’’ Claitor, a 47-year-old Republican, says in a news release. “This is why we need a big-city District Attorney’s Office.’’

“As the only candidate in the race with prosecutorial experience, I can make our DA’s office one that can tackle big-city crime,’’ he said.

Claitor, a former assistant city attorney in New Orleans, was an assistant district attorney in Orleans from 1987 to 1990.

“In one year, I handled more criminal trials than the entire East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s Office did in 2004,’’ he said.

An integral part of Claitor’s plan to protect the parish’s residents is to aggressively attack career criminals and violent offenders with a well equipped and organized strike force.

Claitor’s news release says “such a coordinated team approach to law enforcement partnered with the District Attorney’s Office will result in either life sentences or very, very long sentences for the brutal thugs and dope dealers that do business in the parish.”

Claitor, who was a member of the Orleans Parish Narcotics Strike Force, says violent and habitual street-level criminals are of the highest priority but are not the only priority.

“Political corruption in this parish is in for a rude awakening,’’ he said.

Claitor operates a predominately civil legal practice.

The district attorney’s election is Oct. 4.
