Running for Office: 21st Judicial District Court Division A, Betts
Michael “Mike” Betts, who is running for the 21st Judicial District Court’s Division A seat, said he is a lifelong conservative Republican.
A judge, as an elected public servant, should be held to a high moral standard in both his personal and professional life, so that the people coming before the court can have faith that the correct decisions are made in the cases affecting them, Betts said.
Betts and his wife are active members of First Baptist Church of Denham Springs.
Betts said he has devoted hundreds of hours of pro bono work to those less fortunate, and has accepted appointments to several hundred children’s services cases.
He is a member of several chambers of commerce.
Betts said he is a member of all national, state and local bar associations, and is currently serving as an officer in the 21st Judicial District Bar Association.
He enrolled at LSU in 1980, walked onto the baseball team, earned a scholarship in 1983 and lettered in 1984.
After graduating from LSU in 1984, he earned a Juris Doctorate from LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1989.
Betts has maintained a private law practice for 19 years, handling a wide range of cases for individuals, families and small businesses.
Betts, who is 46, has been married for 14 years to the former Margie Pennington, of Baton Rouge, whose grandparents lived in Denham Springs.
Betts said he has always believed that service to the community is an important responsibility and has been a member of the Kiwanis Club, a service organization which raises funds for service and community projects.
He and his wife have also been active in local Christmas charitable groups, providing toys and meals for needy families.
They also support the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the March of Dimes and a number of other charitable organizations, as well as serving as sponsors for the Relay for Life.
