Richard Fontanesi of Baton Rouge said he is running for the U. S. Senate as a member of the Libertarian Party.

“A vote for a Libertarian is an unequivocal statement that you want smaller government,” Fontanesi said in a prepared statement.

He hopes to replace Democrat U. S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, who is running for her third term. The general election is Nov. 4.

Fontanesi, 45, is a database administrator for a home health-care firm. He is a native of San Diego and made an unsuccessful bid for a California congressional seat in 2002.

“I am not an office-shopping politician and politics is not the vocation of my family,” Fontanesi said.

“I am just seeking good government to live under for myself and the people of Louisiana,” he added.

Fontanesi said libertarianism is the belief that the personal and economic liberty of the individual should be respected by government and the rest of society.

“Right now the government lays claim to all sorts of privileges that the founding generation of our country would have found intolerable,” he said.

“We are bearing the burden of the encroachment of big government into our lives and I don’t know how much more we can handle,” Fontanesi said.

Fontanesi said that, if elected, he would work to end the deployment of U.S. troops in Iraq. He said the war “has squandered far too much national treasure and pointlessly placed U. S. troops in harm’s way.”

Fontanesi is married, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a private pilot and skydiver.

He said he is also a member of Mensa International, a society that claims members have recognized IQ’s that are in the top two percent of the population.
