Running for Office: Metro Council District 2
Getting things done in government takes cooperation among residents, city-parish government, other agencies and businesses, said Melanie Smith-Johnson, a candidate for the District 2 seat on the Metro Council.
“What we know is that District 2 thrives when the people thrive. Our greatest assets are right here — our people, our children, our local businesses,” Smith-Johnson, a Democrat, said in a campaign statement. “We must match the potential of our people, of our newer businesses with a commitment from the city at the policy level.”
District 2 is located primarily in the northern part of the parish and includes the communities of Alsen and Scotlandville.
A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Smith-Johnson graduated from Southern University Laboratory High School and earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Southern University.
She is the coordinator for Southern University’s Ronald E. McNair Program, which helps low-income, first-generation college students and students from traditionally under-represented groups.
She has been career adviser with the U.S. Department of Labor, program coordinator for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families at Baton Rouge Community College, program coordinator in the FINDWork Program with Louisiana Department of Social Services and job developer with the Governor’s Office of Women’s Services.
Smith-Johnson is a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and is the mother of two sons, Harith and D.J.
She faces incumbent Ulysses “Bones” Addison and Gerald Handy, both Democrats, in the Oct. 4 primary.
