Running for Office: Port Allen mayor
Zane Nelson, a candidate for Port Allen mayor, said one of his top priorities, if elected, will be to rejuvenate the city’s infrastructure.
Nelson said in a statement that managing the city’s resources, public safety and its drainage system will be given “top consideration” and applied in a fiscally responsible manner.
A lifelong resident of Port Allen, Nelson, 60, retired from the Louisiana Department of Social Services in 2006 after 20 years in the counseling field.
Nelson said his counseling experience helped him develop excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to understand the needs of others.
When a resident has a problem with an issue concerning City Hall, Nelson said every effort should be made to solve that problem.
“The last thing anyone needs is for our city government to be a part of the problem by being unresponsive,” he said.
Nelson, a Republican, said that he is trying to follow the advice of his mentor and grandfather, the late John S. Nelson, who represented West Baton Rouge Parish residents as a state senator in the 1950s and 1960s.
A graduate of LSU, Nelson said his grandfather taught him that being honest and straightforward are the characteristics of good leadership.
“To say that I will have an open-door policy is an understatement,” Nelson said. “If you need to talk to me, I will be available to you. Citizens with concerns should not face obstacles when trying to meet their elected officials.”
Nelson is running against incumbent Mayor Derek A. Lewis, a Democrat, in the Oct. 4 election.
“If the people of Port Allen will give me the chance to be their next mayor, I can promise them something completely different,” Nelson said.
