Judge Jeff Hughes of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal in Baton Rouge is campaigning for the District 5 seat on the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Hughes is the first Republican judge from Livingston Parish and has been on the bench for 17 years.

He served on the 21st Judicial District Court before becoming an appellate judge, according to an announcement of his candidacy.

The announcement goes on to say Hughes was salutatorian of his class at Denham Springs High School, where he played football, basketball, baseball, ran the 440 and high-jumped.

He was named the Livingston Parish most valuable player in basketball his senior year.

A National Merit Scholarship finalist, Hughes earned an academic scholarship to LSU, where he was selected for, and published by, the Louisiana Law Review.

Hughes was in private practice for 12 years before first election in 1990.

He has also volunteered as judge in drug court and juvenile court.

He conducted 65 jury trials without a mistrials and kept his dockets current.

The judge describes himself as a fiscal and philosophical conservative who believes in the rights to life, liberty and to bear arms.

“I’ve played sports at just about every high school in this district, and as a lawyer I appeared in every court from the 1st Circuit to the White Castle Mayor’s Court,” Hughes said.

“I know these parishes and I know the values of the people I hope to serve.”

Restoring high ethical standards to the Supreme Court will be the primary issue in the campaign, Hughes said. He cited a U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey that ranks Louisiana 49th in judicial fairness.
