Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball is seeking re-election to the District 5 seat she has held for 16 years.
According to an announcement of her candidacy, Kimball said that as a member of the Louisiana Supreme Court, she led efforts to increase financial disclosure and ethical reforms for Louisiana judges. She also helped make all Louisiana Supreme Court hearings available live on the Internet.
In addition, she pushed for restrictions against lawyers who distribute inaccurate advertising. And she supported efforts to end the careers of judges who run their courts improperly.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Louisiana on the Supreme Court,” Kimball said. “I’m proud of our efforts to reform the judicial system, crack down on misleading lawyer advertising and remove unethical judges from the bench.”
The Louisiana CASA Association has named Kimball an Ambassador for Children. CASA refers to court appointed special advocates who help secure safe and permanent homes for abused and neglected children.
In 2006, Kimball has also won the Distinguished Jurist Award from the Louisiana Bar Foundation.
She is a member of both the Louisiana Criminal Justice Hall of Fame and the LSU Alumni Hall of Fame.
In addition, Kimball has been named an Outstanding Alumnus of the LSU Law Center and was presented the Outstanding Judicial Award from Victims & Citizens Against Crime, Inc.
Prior to serving on the Supreme Court, Kimball served for 10 years as a district judge for the state 18th Judicial District.
She also has served as an assistant district attorney for the 18th Judicial District. She was special counsel to the Attorney General’s Office and she was general counsel for the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice.
The Supreme Court justice has been married to Clyde Kimball for 41 years. They have three children and six grandchildren.
