Running for Office: Metro Council District 4, Messina
District 4 Metro Council candidate Wayne Messina said the top concerns for the district are infrastructure, drainage, traffic, education and public safety.
“I plan to be a bridge between the Metro Council, the people and the elected officials of the various city councils, to have everyone work together toward a common goal, the good of the people,” Messina, a Republican, said in a written statement about his candidacy.
District 4 is bounded, generally, by the parish line to the east, Florida Boulevard and Choctaw Drive to the south, the Comite River and Foster Road to the west, and McCullough and Denham roads to the north.
Messina, 62, graduated from Nicholls State University with a bachelor’s degree in history and from LSU with a master’s degree in education administration/supervision. He also has an additional 30 credit hours of coursework from Southern University.
Messina spent 16 years as assistant principal/principal at Baker High School and has been the director of security for East Baton Rouge Parish school system for five years.
“I do not claim to be a politician. I consider myself a public servant for the past 40 years,” he said. “I am a person who thinks as an individual, but one who always listens to the concerns of the people.”
Messina is married to Janet Mitchell Messina and they have two children and four grandchildren. He is a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Messina faces Scott Wilson, also a Republican, in the Oct. 4 primary. Incumbent Joe Greco cannot run for re-election due to term limits.
